WEATHER HELM REPOWER WINTER 2010

A GREAT CAPE DORY GETS SOME NEW POWER...

One of the perfect engines we've found for replacing the original power in older Cape Dory sloops is the Kubota-based diesel engine by Beta Marine. "Weather Helm" is the 28 foot variety with the stock 13 Hp Volvo still with her. Having completed Beta repowers in Cape Dory 25s, 27s, and 31s, the 28 foot model will be well served by the Beta 16 Hp, 2 cylinder engine.

"Weather Helm" was a new vessel to Noank Village Boatyard. Looking at the old MD series Volvo, painted in various colors, was evidence that it had seen many years of service and had various parts serviced/or replaced. Having been out of the boat the previous year, it was decided it was the last time. New Power was in the future.

The Beta 16 will work well in the Cape Dory 28. The physical size adapts well in re-powers such as this. This engine is known for its smooth, quiet power – not typical in other 2 cylinder varieties. Typically installed in "owner savvy" yachts, these engines are thoughtfully laid and easily maintained. Various options are available, such as the 70 amp. alternator the owner chose.
